The Ethiopian Telecommunication Corporation
(ETC) is the only the provider of telecommunication services;
There are more than 190,000 telephone lines
in the country;
543 cities and towns have been
inter-connected within the country. 187 towns are provided with automatic and
semi-automatic exchanges. The rest 247 are serving on manual basis and 109 are rural radio

Under the new development program, a
project has already been started as of 1997 to provide additional 550,000 exchange lines
up to the year 2000. Accordingly, to support the Federal and Regional Governments'
five-year development program, the installation of a 36000 lines capacity GSM mobile
