Telecommunication

The Ethiopian Telecommunication Corporation (ETC) is the only the provider of telecommunication services;

There are more than 190,000 telephone lines in the country;

543 cities and towns have been inter-connected within the country. 187 towns are provided with automatic and semi-automatic exchanges. The rest 247 are serving on manual basis and 109 are rural radio call and pay stations;

Under the new development program, a project has already been started as of 1997 to provide additional 550,000 exchange lines up to the year 2000. Accordingly, to support the Federal and Regional Governments' five-year development program, the installation of a 36000 lines capacity GSM mobile telephone system is successfully completed and the provision of services has begun in Addis Ababa. Currently, more than 6000 subscribers are using the Cellular Mobile service.

Internet

ETC is the only Internet service provider (ISP) in Ethiopia;
ETC started giving Internet services since January 1997 and so far it has about more than 3,000 subscribers with a bandwidth of 512 kbps.
