This Request for Expressions of Interest (EoI) follows the general procurement notice for this project that was posted on DG Market on Dec. 09, 2004.

The Government of the federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia (GoE) has received a credit from the International Development Association (IDA) toward the cost of the Ethiopian Nile Irrigation and Drainage Project, and it intends to apply part of the proceeds of this credit to payments under the contract for Construction of Megech-Serab Irrigation & Drainage Scheme.

The Ministry of Water Resources intends to prequalify contractors and/or firms for the construction of the above mentioned irrigation and drainage scheme that involves construction of a surface water conveyance system extracting water from Lake Tana and distributing to farmers in the Seraba area (4,000ha) or West Megech in Amhara National Regional State, North Gondar Zone, Dembia Woreda. The pump station complex includes (i) an approach channel 300m long to be constructed under water in Lake Tana, (ii) a pump station to abstract raw water with a maximum capacity of 22,250 m3/hr, (iii) 1500 mm diameter 120m long rising main, and (iv) a rectangular reinforced concrete head ditch. The pumping station will be equipped with five vertical deep well turbine pumps installed in a wet well. The water delivery system is based upon a 20.70 km long trapezoidal earthen Main Canal (MC) with a head discharge capacity of 5 m3/sec to supply water for the Secondary Canals (SC). The delivery system also comprises 12 SCs with a total length of approximately 37 km taking off perpendicularly from the MC running down long the prevailing slope to supply water for 12 Sub Secondary Canals (SSC) and nearly 140 Tertiary Canals (TC). The total length of SSCs  approximately 23 km which supply water to TCs. Each TC serves a net command area of 10 to 40 ha. It is expected that invitations for bid will be made in June 2010.

Prequalification will be conducted through prequalification procedures specified in the World Bnak’s Guidelines: Procurement under IBRD Loans and IDA Credits, May 2004 (latest revision), and is open to all bidders from eligible source countries, as defined in the guidelines.

Interested eligible applicants may obtain further information from and inspect the prequalification document at the Ministry of Water Resources (address below) from 0830 to 1730 hours (local time) Monday to Friday A complete set of the prequalification document in English may be purchased by interested applicants (a) on they submission of a written application to the address below and upon payment of a non-refundable fee of ETB 650 (Six Hundred and Fifty ETB) or in USD 50 (Fifty USD). The method of payment will be chashier’s check or direct to Ethiopian Nile Irrigation and Drainage Project’s account with National Bank of Ethiopia A/C No. 0160101391000.

Applications for prequalification should be submitted in sealed envelopes, delivered to the address below by 15 April 2010, 10 and be clearly marked “Application to Prequalify for Ethiopian Nile Irrigation and Drainage Project, Construction of Megech-Seraba Irrigation & Drainage Scheme, ICB No.: MoWR/I & D/ICB/W/001”
