History

Ethiopia is a country with enormous natural, resources which has great potential for agricultural development. The country has the largest livestock population in Africa and ranks 10^th in the world in terms of the livestock resources. There are 31 million cattle, 24 million sheep and 18 million goats and 57 million chickens in different region of the country.

With a desire to develop and make use of Ethiopia's rich potential for its economic development and for the benefit of its people, the MIDROC Ethiopia Investment Group decided to invest in the country's agro-industrial sector by establishing a company named ELFORA Agro-Industries PLC.

ELFORA Agro-Industries PLC was established in 1997 through the acquisition of eight livestock and meat processing plants with a total value of USD 54.7 million. It is the largest Agro-Industrial company in the country.  The word "ELFORA" which stands for natural products, comes from two Borena Oromo words; ELA and FOR A.  "ELA" means permanent water point and "FOR A" means rainy season grazing land, thereby signifying the high quality livestock products produced under traditional pastoral system as well as modern ranching. The company has eight agro-industry operating units, seven ranches, five holding grounds, three feedlots and one quarantine.

Operation

ELFORA, with its main office in Addis Ababa, is now organized under the newly established Chief Executive Office of MIDROC Ethiopia.  It is divided into three (3) major distinct operations under the overall supervision and support of the main office.

 ELFORA - Food Processing and Crop Production Operations manages five meat processing plants which are located in regions were the raw material supplies are favorable.  It also runs one farm which produces fodder for live animals and variety of crops.

Livestock Operations is engaged in live animal supply,  purchasing centers, holding grounds, ranches and quarantine stations.  Its facilities are also strategically located in the major livestock producing regions of the country.

The Poultry Operations has farms at four different locations and sub-locations.  It has also modern broiler processing (poultry slaughter house) and packing unit.  It produces table eggs, broiler meat, day old chicks, etc.. 

ELFORA has created employment opportunities for over 3,000 people.  The company covers the complete chain of livestock facilities, from purchasing of the animals through holding ranching, vaccination and quarantine, slaughtering and processing including canning.
